Medically depression is defined as a continuous feeling of sadness, hopelessness. Worthlessness and tiredness or guilt that interferes with a persons ability to do work and care for themselves and others around them in anyway. There are many treatments for depression out there but the most common treatments for treating depression are psychotherapy and medications.

Psychotherapy is also called talk therapy or personal counseling, in it you can talk about everything which causes you to take stress in your life to the professionally trained psychotherapist, they listen and try to understand the problems and the tough times you are going through and they provide some tip or advice on how to cope or deal with these problems in a good manner. Many studies have approved of and support the idea of this kind of therapy for treating depression.

The psychotherapy helps a person in developing good strategies to cope or deal with stress of everyday life and also help reduce them. Basically there are four types of psychotherapy; Cognitive/Behavioral, Interpersonal, Psychodynamic, and Psychosocial. The type or types of therapy that a person will receive will depend on the type and depth of Depression he/she has.

Medication can be very effective in treating depression. Although there are a wide variety of different medicines available to treat depression but they have their various side effects as well. These medications are also one of the prime treatments for depression, people when diagnosed of depression are first prescribed medications.

And medications are also the most advertised treatments for depression and the common person thinks that it is the best way to treat depression. They help alleviate symptoms of moderate to severe depression. These medications include anti-depressants which are the most general and widely used medications.

Studies show that if a person uses medication while undergoing psychotherapy then the probability of treating depression is higher, around 80% - 90%. So it is preferred to use medications alongside medications. While using medications consult the doctor for appropriate usage, because it may be dangerous when taking medications without consulting the doctor.
